Tern

A journal of translation and conversation

Letter from the Editors

In this issue, you will find poetry by Leo Boix and Karoline Brændjord (translated from Norwegian by Rachel Rankin), short fiction by Tere Dávila (translated from Spanish by Rebecca Hanssens-Reed) and Kostiantyn Moskalets (translated from Ukrainian by Oksana Maksymchuk and Max Rosochinsky), conversations between Esther Kinsky and Caroline Schmidt and Efe Duyan, Marko Pogačar, and Aleš Steger, and artwork by Shivani Shenoy. Themes of space and boundaries connect these works. The narrator goes through the looking glass in Moskalets’ “The Seventh Chapter,” the speaker wanders through corridors between his two countries in Boix’s sonnet, and in Braendjord’s poetry, the speaker learns how to fit into a shrinking world.

Thank you to our contributors for trusting us with your work: Leo Boix, Karoline Brændjord, Tere Dávila, Efe Duyan, Rebecca Hanssens-Reed, Yücel Kayıran, Esther Kinsky, Oksana Maksymchuk, Derick Mattern, Kostiantyn Moskalets, Marko Pogačar, Rachel Rankin, Max Rosochinsky, Caroline Schmidt, Shivani Shenoy, and Aleš Steger.

This magazine was born out of the desire for collaboration and friendship. We have learned so much about how to make a journal and how important it is to have a supportive group of friends and mentors along the way. We would like to thank our mentors in the Center for the Humanities, the Center for the Literary Arts, the Program for Public Scholarship, and the WashU libraries and the faculty, students, and staff in the Comparative Literature & Thought department for your support. And of course, we are grateful to our sponsors in the Center for the Humanities and the Center for the Literary Arts for making the creation of TERN possible.
